First Day in Braces

Patients often ask us, “Are braces painful?” Generally, brace placement does not hurt, but you may experience some discomfort the first few days after your braces are placed.

What You Can Expect After Getting Braces

1st Day – The Day Your Braces are Placed: Most patients feel many emotions on this day, from anxiousness to excitement! While your braces are being applied to your teeth, you should feel no pain. For the first few hours after placement, it may take you longer to eat since you have to get used to wearing the braces and learn how to chew with them. Talking may also be awkward at first. Your teeth may feel more sensitive, and you may feel some discomfort as your teeth begin to move. For the first few days after your braces are placed, we recommend that you avoid eating hard and crunchy foods. Instead, eat foods like mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, yogurt, soups, etc. – softer foods that will not add to your discomfort.

2nd and 3rd Days Following Placement: The first two to three days after your braces are placed may be a bit uncomfortable. This is because your teeth are beginning to shift, and you are not used to feeling the pressure of the archwire and elastic ties. No need to be concerned; this means your braces are working properly! If your brackets are causing irritation on your lips and/or inner cheeks, place wax over the bracket to relieve discomfort. We will give you wax and show you how to apply it to your braces. Pain medications, such as Advil or Ibuprofen, can also ease the pain. Follow the dosage guidelines on the product. Salt-water rinses can also bring you relief.

5th Day After Placement: Within a week, you should experience no discomfort or only a minimal amount, at most. At this time, you should be used to wearing braces, talking should be easier, and eating should be less difficult. Though it still may be difficult for you to chew some hard foods, you should be able to resume a normal diet at this point. Still be sure to avoid foods that could damage your braces, including ice, nuts, hard chips, hard or sticky candy, popcorn, and whole apples and bagels.
